expressive realism

The Homelands series has accompanied my artistic practice from the very beginning. It originated in my own understanding of home—shaped by the River Elbe, the North Sea, expansive skies, and the ever-changing movement of water. Seascapes, coastlines, and harbors were among the first landscapes I painted, and they continue to represent both a place of origin and a place of arrival.

Many of these works emerged from a personal longing for home while I was living far away. Over time, the meaning of Homelands expanded. The series no longer reflects only my own places of memory, but also the places of longing and belonging that others carry within them. Paintings of the rugged coastline of Sylt, the colorful villages of Cinque Terre, the shores of Rhode Island, or the Blackforest each tell a unique story while expressing a universal human experience—the search for connection and belonging.

My large-scale acrylic paintings are not intended as topographical representations. Instead, they capture atmosphere, light, and emotion, transforming landscapes into spaces of memory. Water plays a central role throughout the series. It connects places across distances and becomes a symbol of change and permanence, departure and return, familiarity and discovery.

Homelands remains an open and evolving body of work. New commissions continue to lead me to the cherished places of others, while at other times an inner impulse draws me back to the sea. There are moments when I simply feel the need to paint the vast horizon, the shifting light on the water, or the quiet strength of the coastline once again. Perhaps because home is never a fixed destination, but a feeling that continually reveals itself through memories, landscapes, and moments of stillness.

Die Serie Homelands begleitet mich seit Beginn meiner künstlerischen Arbeit. Ausgangspunkt war meine eigene Vorstellung von Heimat – geprägt von der Elbe, der Nordsee, dem weiten Himmel und der ständigen Bewegung des Wassers. Meer, Küsten und Häfen waren die ersten Landschaften, die ich malte. Sie stehen bis heute für einen Ort der Herkunft und des Ankommens zugleich.

Viele dieser Bilder entstanden aus einer persönlichen Sehnsucht nach der Heimat, die ich für einen langen Zeitraum verlassen hatte. Im Laufe der Zeit erweiterte sich der Begriff Homelands: Nicht mehr nur meine eigenen Erinnerungsorte fanden ihren Weg auf die Leinwand, sondern auch die Sehnsuchtsorte anderer Menschen. So entstanden Gemälde von der rauen Küste Sylts ebenso wie von den farbigen Häusern der Cinque Terre, von Rhode Island oder dem Schwarzwald. Jeder dieser Orte erzählt eine eigene Geschichte und trägt zugleich eine universelle Erfahrung in sich – die Suche nach Zugehörigkeit.

Meine großformatigen Acrylgemälde sind keine topografischen Abbilder. Sie verdichten Atmosphäre, Licht und Emotion zu einem Erinnerungsraum, in dem häufig das Wasser zum verbindenden Element wird. Es steht für Wandel und Beständigkeit zugleich, für Aufbruch und Rückkehr, für Ferne und Vertrautheit.

Homelands ist bis heute eine offene Serie. Immer wieder führen mich Aufträge zu den Sehnsuchtsorten anderer Menschen, und ebenso oft entsteht aus einem inneren Bedürfnis heraus ein neues Meeresbild. Es gibt Zeiten, in denen ich die Weite des Horizonts, das Spiel des Lichts auf dem Wasser oder die stille Kraft der Küste erneut auf die Leinwand bringen muss. Vielleicht, weil Heimat niemals endgültig gefunden wird, sondern sich immer wieder neu in Erinnerungen, Orten und Stimmungen zeigt.
